I grew up surrounded by cats, dogs, birds, and fish. In favour of the four-footed ones, I eventually stopped asking my mum for more fish and lovebirds--they all ultimately died from getting too much attention...from my cats.
My first cat was named Ming-ming. She produced roughly seven litters before she finally hit kitty cat menopause and at 13, passed away peacefully in her sleep from complications brought about by nasotracheal cancer.
My first dog, on the other hand, passed away much earlier from what we now suspect was either uterine or ovarian cancer. Snowhite (yes, one word--give me a break, I was three!) was the most human dog I had. She understood words like none of my other pets have been able to and I was devastated when she gave in to her illness.
Since then I have had at least two dozen cats, and roughly fifteen dogs (not all at the same time). In 2009, we lost the last of our Japanese Spitzes, one of five that my third dog Ariel had given birth to. It was this loss, Angelo's death, that first prompted us to adopt from the shelter and since then, my family and I have gotten quite deeply involved with PAWS--them as casual volunteers and myself as a more regular, active volunteer.
I originally created this blog as my own part in spreading the word about PAWS beyond my Facebook posts and word of mouth. It was my intention to feature various shelter animals and their stories, and updates from and about the shelter. The concept has changed slightly since but it is my goal with the rebirth of the blog here on Blogger that I can more actively put up posts and updates.
The second part of this blog involves posting stories about my own babies, proud pet parent that I am, sharing my own experiences with raising these furry, four-footed babies.
As with all my other projects, I hope that those who read my blog will enjoy reading this as much as I enjoy writing it. It is also my hope that this might help other prospective pet parents to at least consider adopting from the shelter.
